Frequently Asked Questions
1. What should I wear?
Pilates is an exercise class – wear what you would normally wear to exercise in – something comfortable and that moves easily (which means no denim!). We do Pilates without shoes, so socks can be useful to protect your feet from the flooring in the centres, and the cold.
2. Do I need to bring anything with me?
Only if you want to. I provide mats and any other equipment that might be useful or used in the routine. If you have your own, then feel free to bring that along, but it’s your choice.
A bottle of water to stay hydrated is recommended, particularly if it’s warm weather.
3. What should I expect in class?
The classes are an hour long, and we do a warm up (usually standing), followed by exercises for the whole body. We finish with some stretches and some mindful relaxation. I play some gentle calming music throughout to help with that mindfulness. Most of the exercises are on the floor, so getting up and down from the floor is required, but we go slowly and move with care and consideration to make sure it’s safe and fun. I demonstrate the movements for you, but will also move around the class to help out, and may adjust your position if I think it will help. I usually talk throughout the session, so listen out for those instructions too. Pilates is a workout for the brain as well as the body!
4. I have an injury, can I still do Pilates?
That really depends on the injury. If you have had to see a doctor about it, then you should get agreement from your medical professional that you are OK to exercise. Once you have that, then we can work on adapting the exercises in class to help suit you so you can still come along. Lots of people find the movement useful to keep the rest of the body working. See below for information about missing classes.
5. What happens if I can’t make it one week?
If you know in advance that you won’t be able to make your class one week, then you can use the swap board to offer your space, and pick up one in another class so you don’t have to miss out. The swap board can be found here:
http://www.bee-inclined.com/customer/stretch-balance-pilates/swap/
24 hours’ notice is required for the swap board though, so as soon as you know, offer up the swap.
6. What if I need to be away for a while, but want to come back when I’m able to?
Depending on the length of time you’ll be away and the reason, I can arrange for you to keep your space in class, and pay a monthly holding fee of £10 until you are ready and able to return. If it is likely to be more than a couple months that you are away for, then I may need you to give up your space, and offer it to someone else, but as soon as you are ready get back in touch and I’ll try to find you a new space.
7. Is there anything I can do at home by myself in-between classes?
Yes, there is! As a paying member for the face-to-face classes, you can also access online recorded sessions. They are in the membership section of the site, which requires a password to access. There are around 50 recorded sessions available for you to try out at home, just as if you were in a class with me! Bear in mind I won’t be able to help you out with your posture or position, so take care!
